The Credit Dispute Process — Step by Step

Get Your Free Credit Reports

Step 01

Download all three reports from AnnualCreditReport.com. Review every account, balance, payment history, personal information, and public records.

Identify Inaccuracies

Step 02

Look for: accounts you don't recognize, wrong balances, incorrect payment status, outdated negative items past 7 years, wrong personal info, duplicate accounts.

Gather Supporting Documentation

Step 03

Collect bank statements, payment confirmations, identity documents, and any correspondence that proves the item is inaccurate or unverifiable.

Write and Send Your Dispute Letter

Step 04

Send a clear, factual dispute letter to each bureau that shows the inaccuracy. Include copies (not originals) of supporting documents. Send via certified mail with return receipt.

Bureau Investigates (30 Days)

Step 05

The bureau must investigate within 30 days (45 if you provide new info). They contact the information furnisher (lender/collector), who must verify the information.

Receive Results

Step 06

The bureau sends written results. If the item is inaccurate or unverifiable, it must be corrected or deleted. You receive a free updated credit report.
